In my situation if I connect directly to the modem then my download speed is roughly Mbs, but if I connect via the R then I can only see around Mbs.
I dont have any answers but you are not alone. I am thinking of trying dd-wrt to see if this is a firmware thing or a hardware thing. Solved an issue on my RouterA which was acting as a router. RouterB, however, the one that is acting as an access point is still capped at mbps even with this feature disabled.
I'm continuing investigation. Already tested it. I still can get to router's set up page by using the IP address I've assigned to it not routerlogin. Thanks for your input. Also, have to add, that upon further testing Access Control feature is what's affecting throughoutput severely as well when the router is in regular mode. Ok, so maybe I am missing something, but wont I have to manually assign IP addresses to all my devices? RouterB was just an access point. RouterB is a simple pass-through hop for IP assignment.
Right, but in my case where I only have the one router I cant use the workaround as I will need the router for DHCP and as such will continue to experience the internet performance hit due to the lack of hardware accelleration.
Is that correct?. My cable gateway is a motorola mbDownside is having to flash it to have the latest firmware free of vulnerabilities. I have tested it myself and can confirm that it works. Update: Asus began rolling back firmware on the stock setups. They are not providing Merlin with the source for Ai-Mesh so you need to be on stock to use it. NAT acceleration a. In this mode, NAT routers store the entire frame before sending it out to its destination. This method relies on the destination device to provide information whether the data is corrupt and needs to be resent, however, it only supports adaptive QoS and may cause issues with some applications. It may be needed to achieve higher WAN throghput.
If the router admin interface provides CPU utilization statistics, that information can be used as an indicator of whether you need to turn on NAT Acceleration to reduce resource utilization under load for your particular internet speed.

Hardware Acceleration is Here for Routers Using OpenVPN
Basically, you must upload the new firmware to the router through its administration page and allow it to upgrade. If you install a new version, you can expect increased security levels, different vulnerability issues to be resolved, improved overall performance and transfer speeds, enhanced compatibility with other devices, added support for newly developed technologies, as well as several other changes.
If you're looking for certain safety measures, remember that it would be best if you perform the upload using an Ethernet cable rather than a wireless connection, which can be interrupted easily. Now came the point when continuing the old way was not an option anymore as things were degraded a lot. Performance boost was needed and here is what I did to get my veteran router back on track. Asus RT-N66U home router. As a number of connected devices has grown at home and also multimedia consumption going up I finally had to do something to boost the performance of my Asus RT-N66U.
Short overview is here. Weird thing I noticed was that home server connected to router with cable had also bad download speed. Depending on router firmware it was either Mbps or 80 Mbps.
But my internet connection has Mbps down-stream and I have seen this machine getting Mbps out from that connection when connected directly to ISP provided router. Some reviews I found from internet concluded that it has very good performance. From screenshots I saw that user interface looks exactly like the same as with original firmware.
Asuswrt-Merlin is an alternative, customized version of that firmware. New feature addition is very low on the list of priorities for this project. Asuswrt-Merlin user interface. Picture is taken from Asuswrt-Merlin homepage. Before I made my decision to go with it I checked also their Github repository to see if the firmware is in decently active development.
There are releases coming. Not very frequently but still it seems to happen on stable manner.

So I felt even better to go with it. After installing Asuswrt-Merlin firmware and configuring the router I made another speed tests. For home user it is easy to go with firmware provided by hardware manufacturer but in longer perspective it may not pay off. Although RT-N66U has decent firmware, there are still better and more performant options like open-source firmware built by volunteers and communities.
Asuswrt-Merlin is good example how different focus on firmware may save router from going to recycle bin. Before abandoning old router, try out if issues are not coming down to router software. I am sure that my RT-N66U will now server me at least some years more.

The best download speed over wireless N was around Mbps. I tried to configure and make different miracles with original firmware but had no luck. DD-WRT — has more options and features than original firmware, 5 Ghz connections are more stable but performance is even more poor.
View previous topic :: View next topic. Hi, forum and developers like Kong etc. Back to top. I believe Tomato offers ctf in the current builds. BL, the topic of ctf has been discussed quite a bit a couple of months ago. Do a forum search and try "ctf" I believe that would be the easiest way to find the discussion so you can get caught up. Since I have only used kong firmware on my r I do not know if BS put ctf in the firmware for your router.
BL wrote:. Again, I do not know if this works for the asus router or not. I prefer dd-wrt so my experience with tomato is limited. Hopefully BrainSlayer and other developers already knows the need for this and is working on it or will do so when Broadcom and other chip manufacturers release the necessary hardware information, meantime I'll sadly be on ASUS Merlin. You could try loading one of kongs firmware not the latest as it been disabled for your router.
Kong had ddtb ddwrt turbo I think it was called enabled in a couple of the recent builds.
If you experience issues with it, just flash back to asus merlin. Some users said it worked fine, others complained about this or that. I never noticed a problem while I was running the firmware. The router protects the entire network behind it by routing all of the devices through your preferred VPN service by default.
There is a guide to setup this router at the bottom of this article. The hardware in consumer level routers is generally cheap, low-end chips made by a handful of manufacturers around the world. Broadcom, one of the companies that engineers and manufactures CPUs for consumer-level routers, has designed a new CPU that has hardware acceleration for cryptography. This is a feature that has been in Intel and AMD processors for years, but it is the first low-end networking CPU to hit the market en-masse with this feature.
Hardware acceleration is an enormous performance increase for processors that are doing crypto, because instead of performing these functions in software, the processor itself has all of the functions hard-coded into it, allowing an order of magnitude more performance. This article focuses on a VPN router that likely has hardware acceleration enabled the Asus RT-AC86Uand tests various configurations to make sure that the feature is working.
Asus has had strong support for OpenVPN built into their routers for quite some time, and the ease-of-use of the stock AsusWRT is a nice-to-have feature. So while Asus has done an okay job of implementing support for OpenVPN so that it works, they have not done enough to make the process easy, nor have they done a great job of keeping OpenVPN itself up to date.
After creating a custom config file for the hardware accelerated settings, you can see in the system logs that the router is using OpenVPN version 2. This means that hardware acceleration, our hallmark feature that we want to make OpenVPN fast, does not work with the stock Asus firmware.Laravel 6 documentation pdf download
The instructions to set up PIA for hardware acceleration are the at the bottom of this article. The CPU utilization during the speed test shows us that the speed is not limited by the processor in the router. You have to install Merlin on your VPN router to get it working.
Be sure to use your own PIA username and password, and to set the log verbosity to your preference lower logs less, higher logs more, it was set to the maximum in this example because I was debug testing the setup.
From there, you click on the country and then copy and paste the URL of the location that you wish to use from the next page. Final Step: You must also import the ca. You get the text for the cert and key from the files that you downloaded by opening the files in Wordpad WindowsTextedit OSX or vim Linux and copy-pasting the text into the appropriate field as shown below.
Other than those minor changes, you can exactly match the graphic above and it should work with your router! Double disclaimer — this setup will not run fast if you do not have one of the Asus routers from the list in this article.
